Mike's Blog - Summer 2011
Far out, I’ve managed to slip under the radar for nearly two years without Morag hassling me for an updated blog haha, but I guess all good things must come to an end and it’s now time for me to get my two index fingers out and actually use my laptop for something other than acquiring more millions on ‘Mafia Wars’ LOL. Ya know, heaps of shit has happened for sure but when it comes to putting it on paper it’s hard – hey I’m a man-artist for god’s sake!
Just walking around the East End these last few months a lot has changed. New shop fronts and fit-outs with top designers opening boutiques, Saba, Jack London, Alannah Hill, Gripp, Sass & Bide – all big names. This is a good. If international names are investing in our precinct it can only be for the long term and adds to the flavour of the street. I really like the mix of shops, some of my favs being “The Chocolate Bean”, home of the truffle hit; “Midwest Trader” & “Dangerfield”, Emo/Groupie Central and of course “Sosta”, meat-heaven….that new taco joint Zambrero isn’t bad either….Rundle Street is fucking cool!
The media machine is also an animal less ‘gnarly’ these days; they don’t paint the tattoo fraternity as a bogun circus anymore . Has the media been educated? Hell No, tattooing is now just so very news-worthy. In saying that, we happily work with the media and enjoy the exposure commenting on the tattoo scene when invited. You should check out the article in Adelaide Magazine [What’s Newz]…apparently we’re an ‘institution’. Makes a change from needing to go in one!
Ok so in summary the studio’s cool, the crew’s cool, the street’s cool and me, I’m still here, doing my thing still enjoying the art and culture of tattooing. I have added a new feather to my tattoo bow [one which is personally rewarding for me] in the form of cosmetic tattooing to re-colour areola tissue in breast reconstructions. It’s satisfying to see people feel physically complete again, and tattooing to make the body whole rather than to enhance.
In closing, I work to appointment so if you want to make a time for a tattoo or a consult, jump online or give the studio a call. On the odd occasion *smirk* that I’m not in the studio, I could be out riding my American beast, sneaking into the odd bar here and there for a Stella or a nice glass of red. Morag and I get out on the water whenever we can – sailing keeps us sane/insane it’s all opinion. Racing is on the agenda for Matador as well, the 'Winter Series' was a good test run and for a first time racing skipper, I came second overall. We then continued on to win Series 1 of the 'Twilight Racing, Cruising Division'. Great stuff and with an awesome boat, an awesome crew and the experience I have gained so far, I look forward to Series 2 plus the Lexus Blue Water Classic race in February. Sailing is a passion; the final frontier and out there on the water it’s just you, your boat and mother nature - often a goddess but sometimes a pure bitch!
So here ends another dutiful spiel and in closing take care, say hi to your neighbour and be safe on the roads! As the slogan says, “Slow down – it won’t kill you!”
In Ink... MikeD
